10 facts : What is SIBO or blind loop syndrome ?

1. SIBO, abbreviated as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, is a condition where there is an overgrowth of bacteria that are not supposed to be present in the normal scenario in that part of the digestive tract. This occurs particularly following a disease or abdominal surgery, when the passage of food and waste becomes slower, creating a breeding ground for bacterial overgrowth.

2. When the wrong types of bacteria overgrow in the small intestine, they feed on the nutrients and food for the otherwise beneficial bacteria, which can lead to abnormal symptoms in gut health. These wrong types of bacteria can feed on the protein and vitamin B12, bile salts which are supposed to support the digestion of fats. In normal circumstances, the small intestinal bacteria digest the carbohydrate and convert it to short-chain fatty acids and gas. Therefore, when there is overgrowth of bacteria, more gas and toxins are produced in the gut leading to many GI symptoms and malnutrition in the long run.

3.The prevalence of SIBO is about 80-90% in cases of irritable bowel disorder, intestinal dysmotility , pancreatitis and chronic systemic conditions. It is more prevalent in the elderly and female population. Usually, the incidence increases with age and the presence of chronic intestinal disorders and dysmotility. SIBO is considered by clinicians as a differential diagnosis of other gastrointestinal non-specific disorders as the actual aetiology is still unknown.

7. Several complications of SIBO can eventually worsen gut health if left untreated:

• Inadequate digestion and absorption of fat, protein, carbohydrate: Since, overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine damages the bile salts so the fat remains undigested. The mucous lining of the intestines is damaged too by the excess bacteria causing poor absorption of carbohydrate, fat and protein. Therefore, there is malnutrition, diarrhoea, and weight loss.

• Vitamin B12 deficiency: As the fat remains undigested, the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K remain unabsorbed. Vitamin B12 which is synthesised in the small intestine is completely affected So, the individual may suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency. Therefore, due to B12 deficiency, nervous system functioning is affected, and blood cell production is lowered. There can be irreversible damage to the nervous system in the long run.

• Calcium absorption: Bacterial overgrowth damages the intestine slowly, resulting in poor absorption of calcium thereby affecting bone health. Weakened bones, prone to fractures, and osteoporosis are common. Kidney stones are also common in cases of poor calcium absorption.

8.There are no standard diagnostic tests for SIBO. The clinical symptoms of SIBO can be nonspecific. Usually, a carbohydrate breath test is considered which is inexpensive and non-invasive. A bacterial culture of jejunal aspirate of more than 1000 units/ml can support the diagnosis. Upper endoscopy is invasive but is done in patients to further support the diagnosis. Laboratory findings like vitamin levels, malnutrition markers are considered to support the diagnosis. Only, in rare cases is, biopsy of the small intestine done. Imaging tests like CT, MRI are done to rule out intestinal abnormalities.

9.Since the condition of SIBO is complex and can be involved with multiple underlying conditions, it is very difficult to manage and treat such cases. The treatment is mainly symptomatic like changing diet, lifestyle, and antibiotics to reduce the bacterial colonies. The recurrence of SIBO is also common so repeated courses of antibiotics are necessary. Supplementation of vitamins in certain cases is required. Surgery is only necessary in case of small intestinal abnormality, diverticula, bowel obstruction, or Crohn’s disease.

10.Again there is no standard diet for every individual who suffers from SIBO. It is individual-specific depending on symptoms and underlying conditions. The goal of diet change is to assist in the treatment and lower the symptoms. The diet should be low in carbohydrates, low in fat, and moderate to low in fibre. Processed sugar items, dairy, whole grains, deep-fried items, and raw vegetables should be avoided. Generally, probiotic-rich food, meat or fish, rice, cooked vegetables, plenty of fluid/water/soups and vitamin supplementation are recommended by the experts.

Emotions are subjective yet universal among all humans. They significantly influence our daily lives, decision-making, behavior, relationships, psychological states, and physical health.

Our emotional thoughts arise from emotional reasoning in response to situations, people around us, events, and past experiences. Emotional responses trigger our thoughts, feelings, actions and behaviors in reaction to external events, situations, or circumstances. Thus, emotions play a crucial role in our everyday lives and the decisions, we make.

Research states that all things in the Universe are made of energy which has a vibrational frequency. Emotions too, have amplitude and frequencies. Positive emotions like peace, love, and joy are found to have higher frequencies as compared to negative emotions like anger, fear, guilt, and sadness. According to the frequency chart, emotions like guilt, and shame have as low a frequency of 30-20 Hz to emotions like love, peace have as high as 500-600 Hz. Studies often link low frequency to disease state, depression and stress. Negative thoughts and feelings can often create a low vibrational frequency state which can create anxiety, and stress and affect our physical health.

Studies have consistently shown that negative emotional thoughts and feelings can significantly affect our physical health and overall well-being. The importance of the mind-body connection and the gut-brain connection highlights how our physical body responds to our thoughts, feelings, and mental state.

1.Self-Responsibility: Recognizing and taking responsibility for our mental state is crucial. Often, we create more pain and hurt from emotional thoughts and feelings by overthinking and getting caught in repetitive loops, rather than addressing the actual situation. It’s important to remember that 95 to 98 percent of our worries are self-created rather than based on reality. Only about 2 to 3 percent of our concerns are truly justified. Therefore, it’s essential to become aware of and take responsibility for our mental state, as this is the first step towards creating positive change.

2. Let go of control: We have to understand that we cannot control everything that happens in our lives. We have to let go and trust the Divine and timings of life. Letting go is important to heal and restore balance.

3.Journaling and practicing gratitude: Daily journaling can release deep thoughts that might otherwise feel heavy and hurtful. Practicing gratitude and maintaining a thankful mindset can elevate our vibrational frequency and promote healing.

4. Healing the Sacral Plexus Chakra: According to Yogic science, the sacral chakra is responsible for maintaining emotional balance, creativity, and a sense of vitality. To heal this chakra, engaging in yoga and physical activities such as dancing, swimming, and savoring life’s simple pleasures— like playing with a child, listening to birds chirping, or enjoying the sound of flowing water—can help release blockages.

5. Daily Affirmations: Choosing words and phrases that align with your life goals, such as mantras or sacred verses, can significantly enhance your positivity and resilience. Reciting these affirmations each morning can set a positive tone for the day. One of the most important things we can do is to let go and trust the Supreme, the Divine, as not everything is within our control.

Finally, staying grateful and expressing our thankfulness for this journey of life is truly fulfilling.

8 facts: Broken Heart Syndrome 💔

1.Broken heart Syndrome is a temporary heart condition known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, as it was first described in Japan in 1990. This condition of the heart weakens the left ventricular muscles, making blood pumping difficult. The condition is associated with a severe emotional episode, extreme physical stress, loss of a loved one, sudden illness, or a serious accident.

2.Broken heart syndrome symptoms may mimic the classic symptoms of a heart attack like pain in the chest, severe pressure or heaviness in the chest, shortness of breath, fatigue and cold sweats. Pathologically, there is no actual blockage in the coronary arteries. Research shows that extreme emotional, and traumatic stress, the rise of catecholamines and stress hormones like adrenaline causes the heart muscles or the coronary arteries to stun the heart temporarily, preventing the left ventricle from pumping blood effectively.

3. Studies show about 90% of the cases are women and many of them recover without any long-term damage. The exact cause is still not known. But the common causes which are found to be:

• Sudden loss of a loved one.

• Severe physical pain.

• Sudden illness.

• Domestic violence.

• Serious accident.

• Huge financial loss.

• Intense fear.

4. Though physical symptoms and ECG changes like ST segment elevation can misdiagnose a heart attack, other imaging studies are required to rule out a heart attack. The most common diagnosis of Broken heart syndrome is no evidence of blockages in coronary arteries which on the other hand, is a classical sign of a heart attack. In the echocardiogram, there is a bulging of the lower part of the left ventricle seen in Broken heart syndrome, which resembles a tako-tsubo (a Japanese octopus trap pot), hence the name is derived. This is quite a confirmatory sign of Broken heart syndrome or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

5. To sum up the differences between Broken heart syndrome and heart attack are:

• The angiogram shows no signs of blockage of coronary arteries.

• Blood work, especially enzyme levels shows no sign of heart damage.

• An echocardiogram shows abnormal bulging or ballooning of the lower part of the left venticle so, also known as Balloning heart syndrome.

• Recovery is faster within days to a couple of weeks.

6. Broken heart syndrome is not usually fatal, and under treatment and observation, the individual recovers within weeks to a month. The prognosis is good and there is also less risk of such episodes in future. But in rare cases, it may become fatal causing severe short-term heart muscle failure. Research continues to learn more about the diagnosis and treatment of cases of Broken heart syndrome.

7. There is no standard treatment for Broken heart syndrome and is mainly individual-specific. Medication is required to reduce the stress on the heart muscles. Medications like Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE), Beta-blockers, diuretics, and blood thinners are used to heal the heart muscles and prevent further episodes. Complete recovery is likely within a month or so.In addition to this, management of stress is also required to prevent such episodes in future.Regular follow-ups are required for the individual.

8. Broken heart syndrome or Takotsubo syndrome has been researched to have certain general pre-disposing risk factors like smoking, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, pulmonary diseases, malignancies, neurological diseases and psychological disorders. Evidence also shows higher prevalences in females compared to males. Although routine checkups, ECG, blood work and echocardiograms are necessary at regular intervals, it is important to work on stress factors like meditation, yoga, deep breathing and mindfulness techniques.

1.Several research studies have concluded that low vitamin D levels are directly linked to anxiety, mood changes, depression and cognitive dysfunction such as impaired memory, sadness, weight loss and loss of appetite. Studies have not shown that vitamin D deficiency causes depression but people who suffer from depression do show low levels of vitamin D.

2. Vitamin D mainly maintains the body’s calcium homeostasis. It is also crucial as a neurosteroid hormone and plays a significant role in maintaining normal brain functions and helping in brain development. Therefore, numerous studies have shown that hypovitaminosis D is linked to depression and neurocognitive disorders.

3.Some studies have shown that seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is more prevalent in winter as there is a lowering of Vitamin D levels in the cold season. Lack of exposure to sunlight in winter months is shown to increase the incidences of depression, mood changes and anxiety issues.

4. Rising cases of suicide have been a common risk factor for low vitamin D levels (psychiatric times.com).A research study in 2023 found a correlation between low vitamin D levels with cases of suicidal behaviour. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation is mandatory for all those who have low levels can help to address mental health issues and prevent cases of suicide thereby saving lives.

1.Glossodynia, also known as Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS), is a fairly common condition. It’s an intermittent burning sensation in the mouth, especially in the tongue, lips, or other areas of the mouth, that is not accompanied by a specific reason. It feels as though the tongue is injured by a very hot liquid. The syndrome may be gradual or sudden in onset. There is no observable physical sign seen either in the tongue or in the mouth while having an episode. The specific cause of BMS is difficult to determine.

2. Most causes of burning mouth syndrome are unknown or idiopathic. Research suggests that it can be related to nerves which carry sensations of taste and pain. The causes are broadly divided into primary and secondary. Primary burning mouth syndrome is uncommon and mainly idiopathic.

3, Secondary burning mouth syndrome is quite common and causes can be related to :

* Vitamin deficiency like Vitamin B complex, lack of iron, zinc ,folate.

* Oral infections like oral thrush, oral lichen planus.

* Allergies following food additives, flavouring substances, mouth care products.

* Acidic drinks, extreme hot liquids, irritating foods like highly spiced foods.

* Dental materials, ill-fitted dentures.

* Dry mouth due to some medicines like anti hypertensives, anti cancer treatments.

* Reflux or Gastro esophageal reflux.

  1. MTHFR, Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, is an enzyme found in human chromosome 1,located exactly in the short arm. It plays a significant role in folate and homocysteine (amino acid) metabolism. Studies have shown that individuals with MTHFR deficiencies can have hyperhomocysteinemia
    with homocystinuria.
  2. Research in the past decades has shown that this enzyme plays a key role in homocysteine metabolism. The deficiency of this enzyme is an inborn error of folate metabolism, which is quite
    rare. Yet, several studies have identified this variant as the most common cause of
    hyperhomocysteinemia and a risk factor for many disorders connected to defective homocysteine
    metabolism.

3.Genetic deficiency of MTHFR is rare, but around 50 cases have already been identified worldwide. Symptoms in such individuals are seizures, developmental delay, neurological impairment, gait dysfunction, and a very high level of homocysteine in urine and plasma.   1. According to medical terminology, constipation is when a person has irregular bowel movements, usually less than three times a week. Normally, a person with regular bowel movements has stool elimination three times a day to three times, a week. Constipation has been the most common gastrointestinal issue affecting millions of people daily.
  2. Normally, the food passes through the large intestine, and the water is absorbed in the colon while forming the faecal matter or stool. Then, the stool formed in the colon is pushed down to the rectum by muscle contraction. If the muscle contraction in the colon is prolonged, by the time, stool reaches the rectum, more water is absorbed making the stool too hard to pass. Passage of the dry hard stool becomes very difficult causing constipation.
  3. The most common causes of constipation are: Lack of movement, lack of exercise, stress. Lack of fibre in the diet.
    Not drinking enough fluids.
    Changes in dietary habits, pregnancy, traveling, ageing. Medications.
    Irritable bowel syndrome.
    Anal fissure.

4.Common symptoms of constipation:

Pain abdomen.
Painful bowel movements.
Feels uncomfortable or bloated.
Bowel movement less than 3 times a week.

5.Generally, constipation is relieved by switching the diet to more fibrous food, more intake of fluid, and exercise. The most common thought that comes to mind when you feel bloated is eaten too much, too heavy a meal or your stomach is filled with gas or air. Abdominal bloating is common both in adults, children and also in babies. The common symptoms of bloating can be pain, distention, belching, excessive gas causing flatulence and abdominal gurgles.
  2. Why do we feel bloated? Bloating commonly happens due to excessive gas or air. Sometimes, gas accumulates in the digestive tract due to the slow breaking down of the undigested food due to delayed emptying. This can give rise to bloating. Another common cause is air getting swallowed while eating or drinking too fast which gives the feeling of bloating.
